Chitkul & Kalpa: Himachal's Last Villages Worth Visiting

Chitkul & Kalpa: Himachal's Last Villages Worth Visiting
📅 22 Aug 2026✍️ Himachal Taxi Tour Team⏱ 6 min read

While Shimla and Manali get the crowds, the Kinnaur belt's Chitkul and Kalpa remain some of Himachal's quietest, most photogenic villages — orchard terraces, Kinner Kailash views and a noticeably slower pace of life.

Kalpa: Sunrise Over Kinner Kailash

Kalpa sits directly across the valley from the Kinner Kailash range, and the view at sunrise — when the peaks turn gold — is one of the best in Himachal Pradesh.

Chitkul: The Last Village on the Route

A couple of hours beyond Kalpa, Chitkul marks the end of the accessible road toward the Indo-Tibet border — wooden Kinnauri houses, a small temple, and the Baspa river running through it.

Getting There

Both villages are usually visited as part of a Shimla-Kinnaur circuit via Narkanda, Rampur and Karcham — roughly 7-8 hours' drive from Shimla to Kalpa, with Chitkul another hour beyond Sangla.

Best Time to Go

April to June and September to November offer the clearest weather; the route can close in heavy winter snow.

What Makes It Worth the Detour

Unlike more commercial hill stations, Kalpa and Chitkul still feel lived-in — working orchards, quiet guesthouses, and locals happy to talk about life this close to the border.
