Shimla, the erstwhile summer capital of British India, remains one of the most-visited hill stations in North India — and for good reason. Between its colonial architecture, deodar forests and easy access from Chandigarh and Delhi, it's often the first stop on a longer Himachal trip. Here are ten spots worth your time.
1. The Ridge & Mall Road
The open Ridge and the pedestrian-only Mall Road form the heart of Shimla. Come for the evening lights, stay for the cafes and street food stalls.
2. Jakhu Temple
Perched at Shimla's highest point, this Hanuman temple offers panoramic valley views and a short, pleasant trek up from the Ridge.
3. Kufri
Just 16 km from Shimla, Kufri is popular for its green meadows, pony rides and, in winter, some of the easiest snow activities near the city.
4. Indian Institute of Advanced Studies
Formerly the Viceregal Lodge, this Neo-Gothic building is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in the hills.
5. Christ Church
The second-oldest church in North India, its stained-glass windows and neo-Gothic facade make it a must-see on the Ridge.
Beyond the Main Sights
Continue on to Naldehra for golf-course views, Chadwick Falls for a quiet nature walk, or simply enjoy Lower Bazaar for local shopping. Most of these can be covered comfortably in a two-day Shimla taxi tour.
